DT Moving Toys

Every Friday with Mr Baigent we have been making cam mechanisms, which are non-electrical moving toys.  We have made them out of cardboard and glue.

Our topic in 5B is Ancient Egypt and we have learnt about pyramids and mummification.  We had fun making pyramids out of paper and we have made a nice display in the main corridor of our projects.

Some children have been taking part in the 5 x 5 project.  We go into the Conservation Area and make up characters and develop them.  This week Mr Baigent came in dressed as a pirate and we all fought him for freedom! We even go out in the pouring rain!

Beginning of term 5

In year 5 we are going to start the ancient Egyptians in our topic. We already know some facts such as they wrote hieroglyphics, had thier wives and slaves buried next to them when they died and were mummified. On the journey to the afterlife they weighed the heart on a scale next to some feathers and if the heart was heavier it meant they would be destroyed.
In Maths we have started on percentages which seems easy so far! We are still enjoying it though.
In Literacy we are focussing on a book called "The day of Ahmed's secret". You will never guess what his secret is...well, we are not going to tell you. You will have to read the book! We want to encourage you to read.
We had a really good Easter holiday. We are still digesting our chocolate eggs!

Our assembly is coming

We are all very excited because we are doing our assembly play this Friday. The play is about highway men who used to steal money and gold from travellers in carraiges. We can't tell you too much about the play because we don't want to spoil the surprise, but it wil be very exciting with something you have never seen in school before!

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

In maths we have been doing co-ordinates and using this method to make faces and shapes.

Science and Victorians

Last Monday 5B had a great time at Oldfield School where we did some exciting experiments in their science lab. We have been learning about solids, liquids and gasses but we mainly focused on gasses. We used things like limewater, acid, lots of different gasses and experimented with flames. We all had to wear safety glasses. Mr Hogg took us all outside and showed us how to make a rocket out of a plastic bottle. When he lit the fuse there was a huge bang and we all had to cover our ears. Mrs Bartlett screamed!

Our homework is finding out about Victorian inventions. They invented so many things it will be hard to choose which to write about.

Sinking of Titanic

This week class 5B has been looking at writing recounts.  We wrote a diary recount of a Victorian Junior maid and her very hard life.  We also watched a clip about the sinking of the Titanic and tried to think how the people would have felt. We found the video very sad lots of people died.   In science we have been talking about reversible and irreversible changes we were wondering about custard and ice-cream.We are hoping Mrs Bartlett is going to bring lots of samples in so we can experiment !!
